Is the 2.2M SHU Carolina Reaper number actually legit?

Been growing reapers for 4 years now. Every seed company slaps "2.2 million SHU" on the bag like it's gospel. But I've read the Winthrop study and the tested samples ranged from like 1.4M to 2.2M depending on grow conditions, stress, soil — you name it. Curious what people's take is. Are we just accepting a marketing number?
The 2.2M number is real, I've seen the Guinness cert. My buddy had his batch tested at a lab in Ohio and got 1.9M. Close enough. Point is it's the hottest commercially available variety, the exact number doesn't change that.
The Winthrop University analysis (Bosland et al.) reported a mean of around 1.64M SHU with individual pods hitting 2.2M under specific stress conditions — high heat, restricted water in the final ripening phase. The issue is that "2.2M SHU" gets cited as a consistent trait when it's really an upper bound from a cherry-picked sample. This is pretty standard in the industry — Dragon's Breath had the same problem. The average home-grown reaper is probably sitting 1.4–1.7M depending on conditions.
Does it matter though? It's hot enough that I can't eat it regardless lol. I grew two plants last season and the pods were incredible looking. I made a sauce with 4 pods and half a bottle of vinegar and it was still face-meltingly hot. Whether it's 1.5M or 2.2M doesn't change my recipe.
@KristineH it matters if you're paying a premium for "world's hottest" seeds and actually getting something well below that. I've grown Moruga Scorpions that I'd put dollar for dollar against any Reaper I've grown. The Reaper has better marketing, not necessarily better peppers.
Moruga is underrated. That's the truth right there. Grew both side by side two seasons ago, same bed, same amendments — Moruga gave me more fruit and I'd argue it had the same or worse heat. But nobody talks about it anymore.
