Live plants are harder to come by than seeds. Taking them across a border generally requires a phytosanitary certificate for every consignment — a per-shipment cost far larger than the plants themselves — and since Brexit that applies between Britain and the EU as well. The result is that there is little cross-border trade in live pepper plants: growers ship within their own country, or not at all. Pepperworld, one of Germany’s larger chilli nurseries, now sends plants only to Germany and Austria, having stopped shipping them to Britain, Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and some twenty other European countries.
