Further InformationEdit Edit

Small C. frutescens pepper common across sub-Saharan Africa, closely related to the African Bird's Eye (Piri Piri). Upright, bullet-shaped pods ripen from green to red. Used extensively in African cooking — stews, chutneys, and hot sauces. Also used in traditional medicine across the continent. Heat 50,000–100,000 SHU. Part of the broader Bird pepper family found throughout Africa and Asia.

How hot is the African Bird?

The African Bird measures 50,000–175,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), making it a very hot pepper — roughly 20 times hotter than a jalapeño (which tops out around 8,000 SHU).
