Pepper X
Pepper X is a Capsicum chili cultivar bred by Ed Currie, the same grower behind the Carolina Reaper, and in October 2023 Guinness World Records certified it as the world's hottest chili pepper. It averages about 2.69 million Scoville Heat Units, well over the Reaper it displaced, and Currie has said it took roughly a decade of crossbreeding and years of testing to stabilize. The pods are lumpy and greenish-yellow with a wrinkled, ridged skin, and Currie has described the flavor as briefly sweet, fruity, and slightly floral before an overwhelming, prolonged heat sets in that can last for hours. Unlike most famous chilies, its seeds have been kept tightly controlled, with the pepper channeled largely into branded hot sauce rather than open cultivation. It stands as the current benchmark of the extreme superhot category and a showcase of dedicated selective breeding.
