Further InformationEdit Edit

A C. chinense variety deeply associated with St. Augustine, Florida, where it's been grown since at least the 1880s. The story goes that Minorcan settlers brought it from the Mediterranean, though it's genetically chinense (South American origin). The local Minorcan community built an entire condiment culture around it. Sweet, fruity heat around 100,000–300,000 SHU. Also listed as Datil Yellow. Sweet/mild selection.

How hot is the Datil?

The Datil measures 100,000–300,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), making it a very hot pepper — roughly 40 times hotter than a jalapeño (which tops out around 8,000 SHU).
