Bred at New Mexico State University by Dr. Roy Harper in 1956 from New Mexico No. 9 crossed with a California Anaheim type. Officially named 'Sandia' by the New Mexico Crop Improvement Association in 1967. "Sandia chile" is the standard market name across the Hatch and Mesilla Valley regions. A red/green New Mexico-type chile with medium-high heat. Note: NuMex Sandia Select is a distinct improved cultivar released by NMSU in 2011, bred for thicker walls and higher yield.
