Bolivia sits at the center of pepper diversity: the wild ulupica (C. cardenasii) and C. eximium grow in its highlands, the locoto (rocoto) in its valleys, and the Chaco lowlands hold C. chacoense. Several studies place the origin of the whole genus in this region.
