Africa’s peppers are mostly C. chinense and C. frutescens types that arrived with Portuguese trade in the 1500s and became local: Fatalii in the Central African Republic, piri-piri across Mozambique and Angola, the Ethiopian mareko fana that goes into berbere, and the habanero forms of Gambia and Ghana.
