Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum is the wild form of the domesticated annuum peppers: the chiltepín, tepin and bird pepper of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. Pea-sized pods, held upright, red when ripe, spread by the birds that eat them. Texas named it the official state native pepper in 1997, and Sonora still harvests it wild for market.
